Does PD Measurement provide Far PD or Near PD?

PD Measurement provides Far PD

Far PD (also called Distance PD) is the standard measurement used in the manufacture of eyewear.
It ensures the correct lens alignment and clear vision when looking at distant objects.

Far PD and Distance PD refer to the same measurement and can be used interchangeably.

What do Far PD (Distance PD) and Near PD mean?

PD (Pupillary Distance) represents the distance between the centers of your pupils.
This measurement is essential to ensure that lenses are perfectly aligned with your eyes.

There are two types of PD:

  • Far PD (or Distance PD):
The distance between your pupils when focusing on a far object.
→ This is the most common measurement used for everyday prescription or single-vision glasses.

  • Near PD:
The distance between your pupils when focusing on a nearby object — for example, when reading or using a smartphone.
→ This value is typically used for reading glasses.

In summary

  • Far PD / Distance PD → used for distance vision

  • Near PD → used for close-up vision

  • The difference between the two measurements is usually around 2–3 mm.
